Green 1997 TL1000SV (Updated: 1998.8.28)

Tires: Dunlop D207
Owner: Stephen P. Smith

Location: New Zealand -- New Plymouth
Experience: 19 years
Bikes Owned: 20
Accessories: BMW puncture repair kit
Modifications: One tooth larger rear sprocket (from TL1000R) Locally made loud mufflers (not for long trips)
Problems: Severe tank slappers without warning prior to being recalled for steering damper. Mystery coolant leak couldn't be traced - but fixed itself. Stumbles! Suzuki NZ attempted several times to rectify this last year without success. It wasn't until connecting up to the internet recently that I realised there was a cure. (Aug 98) Suzuki NZ now fitting new ECU. Also, recalled for new fuel tank.
Comments:
Comfortable, powerful - better than my old Ducati. My RVF400 is quicker around tight twisty roads.

Problems: 98-May-22 I have no outstanding issues, the TL is running strong and handling is stable for me.
Comments:
I don't ride really hard so I may not see some of the problems others are having. After 12 or years without a bike this one is a revelation in how things have changed At 7500 kilometres I replaced the Metzler with a Pirelli MT02 street compound. At 17500 kilometres I installed a Pirelli Dragon GT rear tire. At 22000 kilometres the Dragon GT seems to be wearing like steel but has more than enough grip for my riding style.

Accessories: Suzuki tank bag, half bra for tank, front and rear suzuki pro-stands
Modifications: My dealer had already updated the bike with all the recall modifications..damper,computer. I am adding the power commander unit from dyno jet soon, this seems like a worthwhile mod .plus some braided brake lines.
Problems: Had the latest, greatest recall service completed..the new tank...wish they had left the stickers off it..by the way..my old tank never leaked, and i really wanted it as a spare..damn those liability suits!!!
Comments:
I applied some 1/16 x 3/16 x 1/2" pieces of rubber on the solo seat cover, this eliminates the scratching it was causing.I used rubber cement to apply...seems to work great!!

Accessories: Pit Bull front & rear stands / "Canyon Dancer" bar harness for trailering / Grab-on "Superbike" foam Grips / Vista-Cruise cruise control / Fastlap Frame Protectors (GSXR)
Modifications: Removed DOT side reflectors front & rear / Replaced OEM decals with custom Tapeworks decals / Removed rear bungee hooks from rear subframe (drilled holes into ends of passenger pegs instead) / Added foam rubber strip around seat cowl /16-tooth counter-shaft sprocket /GSX-R750 6-piston brake system (complete) / Increased rear preload to 10mm of threads showing / Polished stock mufflers and header pipes
Problems: Engine coolant WAY too over-full on delivery / Rear brake fluid reservoir WAY too over-full / Engine stumble between 3-4,000 RPM (corrected with third ECU) / Airbox hold-down screws (into frame) were seized / The rear cowling was scratching the tail-section and it was loose (applied a strip of adhesive-backed foam rubber) / Inadequate rebound damping front and rear / Rear suspension linkages came with minimal grease and some bolts were corroded and seized in place (@ 6,000 miles) / weeps oil frfom water pump / clutch slipped until back-torque limiter was replaced (warranty) / Suzuki is late in getting the replacement fuel tanks and gaskets out (their letter said 8/15/98) / Bar-end weights are nearly impossible to remove
Comments:
The 16-tooth front sprocket is great; for $16 you gotta try it. GSX-R750 brakes decrease lever pressure by 25% and make hard braking easier to establish and control. 180-section rear tire stands up less in corner-braking.

Experience: 26 years general (street/offroad/racing)
Bikes Owned: 31
Accessories: Yosh RS3 full S/S system (2nd generation), K&N, Kevlar brake lines.
Modifications: Yosh full race RS3 exhaust (2nd generation?)K&N air filter, Braided brake lines, 180/55 rear tyre Pipes definitely upped power and gave it great sound plus weight saving.
Problems: Head shakes before damper recall, clutch slip after 1000 km service (Castrol Futron 20W-60 oil (semi synthetic). Changed back to straight SAE 40 mineral oil. About 100 km after this slipping stopped and never done it again. Oil leaks from clutch cover etc. Always had stumbles but recently seems much worse, especially around 3000 RPM. Oftens cuts out when slowing in traffic etc. Reluctant to change ECM cause it goes like stink and I'm afraid of losing that. Consumption about 8l/100 km. OEM air filter not sealing properly and letting rocks past lower lip! Cured with K&N.
Comments:
The best bike I've ever owned. Love it to bits despite problems - disappointing that Suzuki didn't sort it properly before launch. Awesome acceleration, power wheelies, good handling once you get used to it and set it up right. Deceptively quick, great sound, unique styling. still great head turner a year later.

Accessories: F1 carbon cans, Lazerline alarm. Someone tried to steal it the other night but they left in a hurry... 120db a quiet night IS alarming!
Modifications: All recall uppgrades + 88C thermostat (from Suzuki Swift believe me or not)
Problems: I had fuel in oil but switched to new ECU and that ended the problem. Immediatly after, I moved from synthetic to mineral oil and my clutch started to slip but after ~1500km it stopped. Previous owner reported no problems but that is really not that surprising when you think about it. Oil leak around clutch-cover. Coolant leak from waterpump. New gas-tank. Everything under warranty, naturally.
Comments:
I could use more power of course. I plan to keep this bike and continue improving it.

Fiercest v-twin I have ever had the good fortune to throw my leg over. My bike has never shown any of the common problems that have plagued some of the others.Incredibly fast, hold on tight to this puppy because screaming will do you no good at all. The list of bikes that my TL has embarassed on the street is long and distinguished , this bike never ceases to amaze me with it's incredible power delivery and ALWAYS produces unlimited silly grins under my helmet. I thought of trading for a TL 1000R when I first heard about them, glad I didn't after riding one.I could not be happier with this bike.

Experience: 28 years of riding experience, racing from 1984 - 1995, no full seasons, just for fun. Ride Dual Sport, Road Race, street commute, street touring (NO FREEWAYS- or at least limited), street sport.
Bikes Owned: 12 or so, currently 3
Modifications: Steering damper added at 1500 miles, Factory updated ECM, new clutch, new fuel tank. Have removed most decals but not all (I like the TL1000 sticker... basically I like stock).
Problems: Stumbles below 4,000 rpm, new ECM fixed it (careful throttle body sync did too). Now it requires several attempts at cold start with choke (Oh well). Clutch slip at 1,000 miles. Added washers on springs to fix, worked for a while - new clutch at 6,000 miles and no problems since. Kept added washers for clutch springs after new installation, "just in case". Weep hole leak at 6,000, dealer corrected and no problems since. Tank developed (noticed) gasket leak at 9,000 turned out the gasket was cracked. New gasket, still leaked (dealer tweaked tank to straighten). New tank - all fixed. Now there's a new recall and I get ANOTHER new tank, gasket and float/sensor assy. Way to go Suzuki! Engine temp 140F on cold days - dealer says so what, tape your radiator, factory manual indiates there are different thermostats available (Euro/USA), dealer says no (?).
Comments:
This is the most bitchen bike I've ever owned. Like seeing the motor, don't want an R model. Excellent wheelies/stoppies. Handles great for the street, easy to ride, comfortable for long distance (for 6'1"/200lb slug) and it looks great! Head shake? Not worth worrying about. Noticed without damper now on rare occaision. I think that being 200lbs helps. I get good response from my dealer and I'm glad that Suzuki keeps coming through (I get to keep all my old parts - great spares). Tire wear - 1800 miles on stock. Best has been 2500 on AZARO's/Trying Pirelli Dragon GT's (185 rear). Fuel consumption - 29 worst, 41 best. 37 ave on long trips. 32 ave for daily use. Suspension has been difficult to optimize. Biggest help was to set front and rear sag (preload). The rear was very low relative to the front. Attitude correction and focusing on the front end damping has made a big difference. Past bikes: '94 RF900R, '83 GS1100E, Ducati Paso, 883, Kawi 400 triple, etc., etc.

I was ready to sell the bike until i had someone from SUZUKI AUSTRALIA finally get it running smooth again. Then when the Tank was to be replaced they said it would be 1 week because SUZI AUST. was in the middle of moving and they couldn't get the tanks to the dealer before then until i spoke to my friend who fixed the stutters and now everything is fine (for now)

Problems: I had some gas in oil, re-programming the ECU seems to have worked. Also I'm getting 5,9l/100km on highway use. Stumbles are also gone, and it hasn't stalled since (which it used to do quite a lot). Changing to 6th gear isn't as slick as to other gears.
Comments:
The new mez3 front is really good, but the rear (Pirelli Dragon GT 180/55) hasn't much grip in it.
